Ability Score Roller

Roll a full set of character stats in one tap, with every die and modifier shown.

How to roll ability scores

  1. Choose a method. 4d6, drop the lowest is the most common.
  2. Choose whether to assign the scores in order (Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, Charisma) or arrange them yourself.
  3. Press Roll ability scores. Dropped dice are faded, and each score shows its modifier.

Rolling for stats

Most tabletop RPGs based on six ability scores let you roll for them. The classic method is to roll four six-sided dice, drop the lowest, and add the rest, six times. This roller does all six at once, shows each die so you can see what was dropped, and adds up the total and modifiers to help you judge the set.

Rolled a weak set?

Many tables let players reroll if the modifiers add up to very little. Check with your game master, and keep a record of earlier sets in the list under the roller. For everything else at the table, from attack rolls to advantage, use the Dice Roller.

Frequently asked questions

How are modifiers calculated?

Subtract 10 from the score, divide by 2, and round down. A score of 15 gives +2, 10 gives +0, and 8 gives −1.

What is the standard array?

A fixed set of six scores, 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, and 8, that gives every character the same total. Choosing it here shuffles the scores into a random order.

Which method gives higher scores?

4d6 drop the lowest averages a little over 12 per score, while 3d6 averages 10.5. Rerolling 1s pushes the average higher still.

Can my game master trust these rolls?

Every die is rolled with your browser’s cryptographically secure random number generator, and each roll is shown, so the whole table can see the result was fair.
