How to use the drawing prompt generator

  1. Choose which parts you want: a description, an action, a place, and an optional challenge like using only circles.
  2. Press New prompt or the space bar. Tap any part of the prompt to lock it, and the next prompt keeps it.
  3. Set the Sketch timer and press Start timer for a quick-draw challenge.
  4. Playing a drawing guessing game? Switch to Drawing game words, pick a difficulty, and only the artist taps to see the word.

Drawing prompts for every kind of artist

  • Daily sketch habit. One prompt a day, five minutes on the timer, no erasing. It adds up fast.
  • Art class warm-ups. Put a prompt on the projector and give the class three minutes. Lock the subject and change the challenge for round two.
  • Beat art block. When you can’t think of anything, a silly combination like a grumpy toaster riding a roller coaster gets the pencil moving.
  • Game night. Use the drawing game words for a Pictionary-style round: one person draws, everyone else guesses before the timer runs out.

Make it harder (or easier)

Turn on Add a challenge for constraints like drawing from a worm’s-eye view or using only warm colors. Constraints sound limiting, but they’re one of the best ways to come up with ideas you’d never have tried. For beginners and young kids, turn off everything except Describe it for prompts like a cuddly octopus or a giant pancake.

Frequently asked questions

How many different prompts are there?

The lists combine into well over ten million different prompts, from simple ones like a tiny penguin to full scenes with a challenge.

Is it good for kids?

Yes. Every word is family-friendly. For younger kids, turn off the action and challenge so prompts stay simple, like a fluffy cat at the beach.

Can I use it for a drawing guessing game?

Yes. Switch to Drawing game words for easy, medium, or hard words. The artist taps to reveal the word so nobody else sees it, then everyone guesses.

What are the challenges?

Optional twists that stretch your skills: draw without lifting your pencil, with your other hand, using only three colors, as a comic strip, and about 40 more.

Can I save prompts?

Your last 12 prompts appear under Earlier prompts, and Copy prompt copies the current one to paste into a sketchbook app or a group chat.
