A perfectly fair coin
Real coins are close to fair, but not perfectly. Research on real coin tosses has found a small bias toward the side that was facing up at the start. This virtual coin has no such bias: each flip draws from your browser’s cryptographically secure random number generator, so heads and tails are exactly 50/50 every time, no matter what came before.
Streaks are normal
Flip enough times and you’ll see runs like five heads in a row. That’s expected, not a sign something is wrong: in 100 fair flips, a run of at least five of the same side is very likely. A run of heads doesn’t make tails “due,” because each flip is independent. The tally and history make this easy to see for yourself, which is why coin flipping is a classic way to teach probability.
Flipping several coins
Choose 2 to 20 coins to toss them all at once and see how many heads and tails come up. It’s handy for games that call for several coins and for probability lessons.
Frequently asked questions
Is this coin flip 50/50?
Yes. Each flip uses the Web Crypto API to choose heads or tails with exactly equal probability.
Can I flip more than one coin?
Yes, up to 20 at a time. The result shows each coin and the total number of heads and tails.
What does the heads rate mean?
It’s the share of all your flips that came up heads. Over many flips it tends to settle near 50%, but over a handful of flips it can swing widely.
Can I use this to settle a bet?
Yes. Agree on who calls heads and who calls tails before you flip, then flip once where everyone can see the screen.
