How to use the team generator
- Type or paste everyone’s name, one per line.
- Choose Number of teams or People per team and enter a number. For pairs, choose People per team and enter 2.
- Press Make teams. Press it again for a completely new split, or use Copy teams to paste the result into a chat or document.
How the teams are made
The generator shuffles the whole list with the Fisher–Yates algorithm, using your browser’s secure random number generator, then deals the names out one at a time like cards. That keeps team sizes as even as possible: when the names don’t divide evenly, some teams get one extra person, never more.
For example, 10 people split into 3 teams gives teams of 4, 3, and 3. Asking for 4 people per team with 10 names gives 3 teams of 4, 3, and 3, not 4, 4, and 2.
Good uses for random teams
- Classroom groups and lab partners
- Pickup games, sports practice, and trivia nights
- Breakout rooms and workshop tables
- Study buddies or pair programming (choose 2 people per team)
Captains
Turn on Pick a captain for each team and the first name dealt to each team is marked as captain. Because the deal is random, so is the captain.
Frequently asked questions
How do I make random pairs?
Choose People per team and enter 2. With an odd number of people, one group will have three members.
Are the teams balanced by skill?
No. Teams are random, and only their sizes are kept even. If skill balance matters, split your strongest players first, then split everyone else and combine the results.
Is there a limit on how many names I can use?
There’s no fixed limit on names, and you can make up to 200 teams, so large classes and events work fine.
Will my class list be saved?
Yes. Your names and settings are saved in this browser so they’re ready next time. They’re never uploaded.
