How to use the yes or no generator

  1. Type your question if you like. It’s optional and never leaves your device.
  2. Choose Yes or no, or add Maybe as a third answer.
  3. Press Get an answer, press Enter in the question box, or tap the space bar.

Exactly 50/50

Each answer is drawn with your browser’s cryptographically secure random number generator, so yes and no are exactly equally likely. With maybe turned on, each of the three answers has a one-in-three chance. Earlier answers have no effect on the next one; the tally simply counts what has come up so far.

Using a random answer well

A yes-or-no generator works best for decisions where either outcome is fine: which errand to run first, whether to try the new restaurant, whether to watch one more episode. For bigger choices, notice which answer you’re hoping for while you wait. That reaction often tells you more than the answer does.

Frequently asked questions

Is the answer really random?

Yes. It uses the Web Crypto API, the same random number source browsers use for security, and yes and no have exactly equal odds.

Does the question I type affect the answer?

No. The question is only shown above the answer. The answer is random either way, and your question isn’t saved or sent anywhere.

How is this different from a coin flip?

The odds are the same. A coin flip suits two named sides like heads or tails, while this tool answers a yes-or-no question directly and can add a maybe.
