How to use the list randomizer

  1. Paste your list. Choose whether the items are separated by new lines or by commas.
  2. Optionally remove duplicates or number the results.
  3. Press Randomize list, then Copy list. Press Shuffle again for a new order.

A truly even shuffle

The list randomizer uses the Fisher–Yates shuffle with your browser’s cryptographically secure random number generator, so every possible order of your list is equally likely. That isn’t true of some popular shortcuts, like sorting by a random number, which can quietly favor certain orders.

When to shuffle a list

  • Presentation and turn order. Shuffle names to decide who goes first, second, and third.
  • Running orders. Randomize the order of songs, questions, or contest entries.
  • Fair review. Shuffle applications or survey responses before reading them, so the order you read them in doesn’t color your judgment.
  • Study practice. Mix up vocabulary or flash card lists so you can’t rely on memorizing the order.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a size limit?

There’s no set limit. Lists with thousands of lines shuffle instantly on most devices.

Does it keep blank lines?

No. Empty lines and extra spaces around items are removed so they don’t end up in your results.

How are duplicates detected?

With Remove duplicates turned on, items that match when you ignore capitalization count as the same, and only the first one is kept.

Can I shuffle a comma-separated list?

Yes. Choose Commas and the list is split on commas. Unless you number the results, the shuffled list comes back comma-separated too.
