Lotteries change their formats from time to time. Always check your lottery’s official rules before you play, and use Custom game for anything not listed, including state games.

Do random numbers improve your odds?

No, and nothing else does either. Every combination has exactly the same chance of being drawn, and the generator shows the odds that one line matches every number. For Powerball, that’s 1 in 292,201,338.

What random picks can do is steer you away from popular choices like birthdays, which only go up to 31, or patterns on the play slip. If you do win, you’re less likely to split the prize with other players who chose the same numbers.

Play responsibly

Lotteries are entertainment, not an investment. Only spend what you’re comfortable losing. If gambling stops being fun, the National Council on Problem Gambling offers free, confidential help.

Frequently asked questions

Are these numbers more likely to win?

No. Every combination has the same odds, and no generator, system, or pattern can change that. Random numbers are simply a quick, unbiased way to pick.

Can a number appear twice in one line?

Not among the main numbers, which are always different, just like the balls in a real drawing. Bonus numbers like the Powerball are drawn separately, so a bonus number can match a main number. In Pick 3 and Pick 4, digits can repeat.

How are the odds calculated?

By counting every possible combination. For Powerball, there are 11,238,513 ways to choose 5 numbers from 69, times 26 possible Powerballs, for 292,201,338 combinations.

Can I use this for my state lottery?

Yes. If your game isn’t listed, choose Custom game and enter how many numbers it uses and the range for each.
