How to use the random letter generator
- Choose how many letters you want and their case: uppercase, lowercase, or mixed.
- Choose all letters, vowels only, or consonants only. To skip hard letters, list them under Leave out these letters.
- Press Generate or hit the space bar. Turn on No repeats if you’re picking several letters for a game.
Great for word games
Many word games start with a random letter. In Scattergories-style games, players race to name something in each category that begins with the letter. Tough letters like Q, X, and Z can stall a round, so a common house rule is to leave them out. Type them into Leave out these letters and they’ll never come up.
In the classroom
- Alphabet practice. Show a letter full screen and ask students to name a word that starts with it.
- Phonics drills. Limit the draw to vowels or to consonants.
- Spelling games. Generate a handful of letters and challenge students to build a word from them.
How it works
Each letter is chosen with your browser’s cryptographically secure random number generator, so every allowed letter has exactly the same chance of coming up.
