How to use the random country generator

  1. Leave every continent checked to draw from the whole world, or uncheck the ones you want to leave out.
  2. Choose how many countries you need and whether repeats are allowed.
  3. Press Pick a country or hit the space bar.

Which countries are included

The list includes all 193 member states of the United Nations plus its two observer states, Palestine and Vatican City, for 195 in total. Territories, dependencies, and partially recognized states, such as Puerto Rico, Greenland, Hong Kong, Kosovo, and Taiwan, aren’t included.

Continents follow the United Nations geographic regions, with the Americas split into North America (including Central America and the Caribbean) and South America. That puts a few countries somewhere you might not expect: Russia counts as Europe, while Türkiye, Cyprus, Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan count as Asia.

Frequently asked questions

How many countries are there?

There’s no single official answer, but 195 is the most widely used count: the 193 UN member states plus the two UN observer states. That’s the list this generator uses.

Why do some flags show up as letters?

Flags are displayed as emoji, and some systems, including Windows, show flag emoji as two-letter country codes. The country’s name is always shown in full.

Can I pick only from one continent?

Yes. Uncheck every other continent. Your choice is remembered for next time.
